Base Course | Aggregates

Halquist Stone is Wisconsin's leading producer of construction aggregates. We produce these materials from natural limestone deposits. Our quarrying process typically begins with drilling and blasting the rock into smaller pieces. Next, the material goes through various stages of crushing and screening to produce the sizes and specifications desired by our customers.

There are two categories of based course. Dense graded Bases, referred to locally as traffic bond, are well graded and include fines that firm up and become a hard, solid base for a variety of uses in construction. In general, the heavier the load, the larger the stone you will select in your base course.

1/4" TRAFFIC BOND
USED IN PATHWAYS, HORSE BARNS AND
ARENAS, BASE FOR PAVERS AND FLAGSTONE
ALONG WITH DRIVEWAY TOPPING.

3" traffic bond
used as replacement material for poor sub grades in road and parking lots. also used in unpaved areas with heavy loads.

3/8" traffic bond
Used in pathways, base for pavers and
flagstone, shouldering material
and driveway topping.

breaker run (6" minus)
commonly used by the department of
transportation for road construction
over poor/wet soils.

3/4" traffic bond
base for concrete and asphalt, driveway stone, base for brick and flagstone patios, trench backfill and shoulder Material

1 1/4" traffic bond
most common material under roads and
parking lots. also used in driveways,
trench and culvert backfill

Open graded base
is a uniformly graded mixture of stone with the finer particles removed. This is done to provide drainage through the base. Halquist produces open graded based to WisDOT specifications for new road construction. Many of our clear stones can also be used in many other applications where drainage through the aggregate is necessary.
